The meeting began with a tribute to Mary Knipper, one of the founders of WCLA. Len Geyer gave a history of Mary's involvement - and many contributions - and she was presented with gifts.
WDNR Southeast AIS Coordinator Patrick Siwula gave a presentation about lake and river invasive species and current threats. He has been workiing with Geneva Lake on their recent quagga mussel discovery, as well as other lakes in our area. Another big threat is Organisms in Trade, which covers aquarium and landscape plants and animals. For example, what do you do when you find an alligator in your lake, as they did in Long Lake.
New river and stream threats include the New Zealand Mud Snail which has been found in Turtle Creek, a cold water creek. Patrick is always interested in hearing from you about unusual plants or animals that you find. His email address is patrick.siwula@wisconsin.gov.
Here is a link to a Sea Grant video that shows how quagga mussels feed. Interesting!
